About Basketball
The History of basketball begins with the invention of the
game in 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts. Dr James Naismith was the the
originator of the Hoop and ball concept! Basketball is one of the world's most
popular and widely viewed sports in 20th century! Infact, a lot of
rules created on that day continue to exist even today!
Basketball is a sport played by two teams of five players on
a rectangular court. The objective is to shoot a ball through a hoop of 18
inches (46 cm) in diameter and 10 feet (3.0 m) high mounted to a backboard at
each end.
A team can score a field goal by shooting the ball through
the basket during regular play. A field goal scores two points for the shooting
team if a player is touching or closer to the basket than the three-point line,
and three points (known commonly as a 3 pointer or three) if the player is
behind the three-point line. The team with the most points at the end of the
game wins
The ball can be advanced on the court by bouncing it (dribbling)
while walking or running or throwing it to a team mate. As well as many
techniques for shooting, passing, dribbling and rebounding, basketball has
specialized player positions and offensive and defensive structures (player
positioning).
A league created by Basketball Association of America in
1946 went on to be known as NBA (National Basketball Association) from 1949
onwards and has since been the most popular and toughest Basketball league in
the world.
In India, the game of basketball started its
journey in 1930 when it was played for the first time. The first Indian
National Championship for men was conducted in 1934 in New Delhi. It has since
become one of the more popular games in India. Indian Government has been
continuously recognizing Basketball talent and conferring them with prestigious
Arjuna and Dhanchand awards on a regular basis!
