Dr APJ Abdul Kalam - An inspiration
“Failure will never overtake me if my determination to
succeed is strong enough.”
A famous quote by a famous son of the soil! Born in
Rameswaram on the 15th Oct 2015, this Tamil boy of Muslim faith went
on to become the “Bharat Ratna” of the country. Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul
Kalam, “People’s President”, “The Missile Man”, Bharat Ratna… call him by any
name – they all evoke tremendous respect, awe and love from all and sundry.
He was a scientist, an administrator, a teacher, and of course
the President of India. It was as science administrator at Defence Research and
Development Organisation
(DRDO) and Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) that he attained his name and fame. The
famous Nuclear test in 1998 (Pokharan-II) propelled Dr Kalam to folklore status
and was indeed the biggest moment of glory for him. As much as it thrust India
into the big-league, it also established Dr Kalam’s credentials across the
world. He was soon elected as the 11th President of India and truly
became the first citizen of India!
One can learn so much from Dr Kalam. Being a Muslim, this
vegetarian man could recite Bhagwat Gita flawlessly. His devotion to the
country and his basic moral values are worth imbibing. His zeal to learn, his
love of teaching, his depth of knowledge, his down-to-earth simplicity, there
are so many things to pick & absorb from his life. Following quote perhaps summarizes
his outlook towards life:
“All Birds find shelter during rain. But Eagle avoids rain
by flying above the Clouds”
His vision & mission of “India 2020” will surely be
achieved through his inspirational autobiography, “Wings of Fire”. And finally,
his body may have moved on but his soul still motivates everyone around.
